Description
Gary Green Bog Also known as Larsonite and McDermitt Green Jasper, Gary Green Bog is petrified swamp bog. During the Miocene Age (11-14 million years ago) wood, algae, swamp vegetation, and mud were covered by volcanic ash and eventually fossilized by silica rich minerals. The bog material gets its green color from traces of iron, aluminum, potassium, sodium, and calcium. Any brown/beige/red tones come from the vegetation burned by the volcanic ash. Gary Green Bog is found in Southern Oregon near the town of McDermitt.
