| Coprolite
Coprolites are fossilized feces, their name derived from the Greek words for "dung" (kopria) and "stone" (lithos). This dinosaur coprolite fossil comes from Utah and is from the late Jurassic era, approx. 145 - 163 million years ago. Coprolites are formed when fresh feces are quickly buried in mineral-rich sediment, preventing decomposition. Minerals from the sediment are gradually absorbed by the dried dung, replacing the organic material and turning it into an exact stone replica which can provide scientists with information about the creature’s diet. |
