Ruby

Birthstone for July

Ruby is the red variety of corundum (aluminum oxide) ranging from deep to pale red, at times with a purple tinge. Ruby with minute needle-like inclusions of rutile is called star ruby, showing a six-rayed star when cut in cabochons.. Sri Lanka has mined rubies since the 8th century BCE. Other ruby localities include India, Myanmar, Thailand, Afghanistan, Madagascar, Vietnam, Cambodia, North Carolina and Montana.  Ruby’s stimulation of the root (1st) chakra adds vital life force to efforts at change, keeping one free from vulnerability to indecision and pessimism.

Sapphire

Birthstone for September

Sapphire is the variety of corundum (aluminum oxide) that is any color besides red, which is called ruby. Sapphire with minute needle-like inclusions of rutile is called star sapphire, showing a six-rayed star when cut en cabochon. Sapphire locations include Brazil, Montana, India, Madagascar, Australia, and Sri Lanka. Metaphysically, sapphire is used for bringing peace and communication.

Emerald

May Birthstone

The ancient Egyptians, who valued emerald as a symbol of fertility and life, mined this bright green variety of beryl as early as 1300 BCE. Colonial Spain removed a great many emeralds from deposits in Colombia. Other localities include Russia, Austria, Norway, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Zambia, and North Carolina. Metaphysically, emerald works with the heart (4th) chakra to instill love and compassion, as well as to open one to true abundance and prosperity.

Topaz

November Birthstone

Topaz occurs in a variety of colors, the most well-known being imperial (golden-yellow sherry) topaz, blue topaz and pink topaz. Blue topaz can occur naturally but is typically pale. Natural pink stones are rare, though yellow topaz from Brazil turns pink when heated. Topaz sheds light on “the path,” enabling one to “be” rather than “do.” Notable localities for gem-quality topaz include Brazil, Russia, Nigeria, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Mexico, Colorado, Texas and California.
