Fern Fossil
These ancient fern fossils date back from 280-300 million years ago during a time known as the Pennsylvanian Period. A prehistoric swamp that covered part of what is now the eastern United States, populated by huge dragonflies, amphibians, and other ‘creepy crawlies’. Many plants grew in much larger proportions during this time, including ferns that reached upwards of 40 feet in height and 2 feet in diameter. Much of it was preserved in sediment underwater, saving them from immediate decay. As land changed, the wetlands turned to mountains and eventually into the coal we mine today. The white, talc-like mineral coating of this fossil is pyrophyllite which has replaced the vegetable material.
