Turquoise
Alternate December Birthstone A hydrous copper aluminum phosphate, turquoise was one of the first minerals to be valued as a gem. Turquoise is French for “Turkish,” because the ancient trade route from Iran, where the finest turquoise is still found today, went through Turkey. 7000-year-old turquoise beads have been found in Iraq. The Egyptians mined it in the Sinai in 3200 BCE. Native Americans have mined and worked turquoise for about 1000 years. A stone of wholeness and well-being, turquoise stimulates and harmonizes the throat (5th) chakra, empowering the shy to speak their truth and share wisdom. Amazonite One of the many members of the feldspar family, amazonite is the blue variety of microcline feldspar, named after the Amazon River for its intense blue hues. Metaphysically, amazonite is used to bring joy to life and balance for women. Fine specimens of amazonite are found in Russia, Brazil, Colorado, and China.
